The Academies of Louisville recently hosted an engaging learning exchange during the recent Ford NGL Louisville in Action event, focusing on how educators, employers, and community leaders can better engage Generation Z in the workplace. Shon Adams' Presentation: Understanding Gen Z

The event began with an insightful presentation by Shon Adams, Business Partner Coordinator for the Academies of Louisville Alliance. Adams offered a detailed overview of Generation Z, emphasizing their defining traits and workplace expectations:

  • Digital Natives: Gen Z is the first generation to grow up entirely in a digital world. They are tech-savvy and adaptable.

  • Diverse and Globally Minded: Born between 1995 and 2010, Gen Z is the most diverse generation in history, with a global perspective due to constant connectivity.

  • Value-Driven: They seek authenticity in life experiences and are more fiscally conservative than millennials.

  • Work-Life Balance: Gen Z values flexibility in their work schedules and prefers options that support a healthy work-life integration.

Adams highlighted several key characteristics of Gen Z in the workplace. In terms of job loyalty, Gen Z is people-oriented, often questioning authority while preferring competent leadership. Their motivation stems from flexibility, independence, opportunities for skill development, and a preference for fewer rules. Communication styles are casual, direct, and immediate. Gen Z also values feedback that is frequent, accurate, specific, and timely. Additionally, they focus on working smarter rather than longer, placing a high value on flexibility in their work schedules.

Recruiting and Retaining Gen Z

Adams shared key statistics for attracting Gen Z talent:

  • Social Media Recruitment: 83% of first-year Gen Z college students support employers contacting them via social media for job opportunities.

  • Networking: 28% leverage their networks for job opportunities.

  • Inclusive Culture: 33% expect an inclusive, transparent culture.

  • Multiple Roles: 75% desire multiple roles within an organization.

For retention, Adams suggested:

  • Job Security: Offer stable employment opportunities.

  • Technology Integration: Embrace technology to enhance productivity.

  • Flexibility: Provide flexible work arrangements.

  • Recognition: Recognize achievements to boost morale.

Adams emphasized the importance of corporate social responsibility to Gen Z, noting that 93% consider a company's social impact when deciding where to work. This generation values organizations that demonstrate commitment to environmental initiatives, engage in corporate philanthropy and community support, maintain ethical labor practices, and encourage employee participation in volunteer work. For Gen Z, a company's efforts to reduce its environmental footprint, contribute positively to society, treat employees fairly, and provide opportunities for community engagement are significant factors in their employment decisions.

Moore High School; Dr. April Brooks, Athletics Director at JCPS; Hannah Roby, Rides Manager at Kentucky Kingdom; Vince McClendon, a Firehouse Subs franchisee; and Tyler Luna, Career and College Specialist at Norton Healthcare. Kristin Wingfeld with JCPS moderated the discussion. Each panelist provided unique insights into connecting with this generation, drawing from their respective roles in education, sports management, amusement park operations, business ownership, and healthcare workforce development.

Matthias Martinez described Gen Z as "disruptive in a good way," highlighting their willingness to challenge norms and embrace innovation. Dr. Brooks emphasized the importance of starting early to build relationships with young people, recognizing that Gen Z values authentic connections and support in their professional development. Hannah Roby highlighted Gen Z's passion for social causes and preference for jobs that align with their values, reflecting the generation's desire to make a difference and work with purpose.
