On Tuesday, December 4, 2024, Valley High School transformed into a professional training ground as industry experts conducted mock interviews with students from the Business & Industry Academy. This strategic event aimed to equip students with critical career preparation skills, offering a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience in a supportive environment.
Preparing for Professional Success
The mock interviews brought together representatives from diverse industries, including Kroger, Chick-Fil-A, MSD, Prudential Heating & Air, Strategus, Red7e, Meijer, Mortenson Family Dental, UPS, Schuler Bauler Real Estate, and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. This collaboration provided students with authentic interview experiences. By simulating real-world job interviews, the event offered students a chance to develop crucial professional skills and receive immediate feedback from industry professionals.
Insights from Industry Professionals
TJ Thompson, Talent Manager at Chick-Fil-A, emphasized the importance of authenticity during interviews. "It's ok to be nervous," Thompson noted, adding that confidence comes with practice. He advised students to maintain strong eye contact, offer a firm handshake, and demonstrate genuine interest in the position. Thompson also stressed the importance of politeness and friendliness, qualities that are especially crucial in customer-facing roles.
Morgan Kleinhenz, Associate Resource Manager at Kroger, provided comprehensive insights into what makes a successful interview. She highlighted the importance of confidence, strong communication skills, and asking thoughtful questions about the job. Morgan also pointed out that showing personality and maintaining eye contact are key positive attributes. On the flip side, she cautioned against excessive fidgeting, lack of engagement, and minimal communication during interviews.
Kevin Gibson, Regionalization Director at MSD, offered broader career guidance, emphasizing personal growth. His advice, "Don't confuse motion with progress," served as a powerful reminder that intentional preparation is key to future success. Gibson was particularly impressed by students who demonstrated clear career goals and had plans to achieve them. He was most impressed with a 15-year-old student named Zakkaiya (Porter), who showed ambition and had a semi-plan to achieve her goals.
Stef Albiero, Digital Sales Director at Strategus, viewed interviews as performances. He advised students to adapt their communication style to specific industries and to go above and beyond expectations. Albiero emphasized the importance of remaining comfortable under pressure, noting that interviews often test a candidate's adaptability. He was most impressed with a student named Richard, who was a natural communicator.
Jaymie Wilson, Installation Manager at Prudential Heating & Air, focused on industry-specific expectations. He highlighted the importance of having a driver's license, demonstrating reliability, and showcasing strong communication skills. Wilson emphasized that professional manners are crucial, especially for roles that involve customer interaction.

Elissa Gagel, CTE teacher for the Business & Industry Academy, worked with Saundra Gibson, Business Partnership Coordinator for the Academies of Louisville Alliance, to organize the mock interviews. This collaborative effort brought industry professionals to Valley High School, providing students with real-world interview experiences.
The event offered a comprehensive approach to career preparation. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors from the Business & Industry Academy participated in mock interviews conducted by representatives from various industries. Additionally, two representatives from UPS spoke to seniors about job possibilities, further expanding students' career horizons.
