Keyshawn Stoner's Academic Recovery Comeback at Shawnee
Keyshawn Stoner's journey at the Academy at Shawnee began with significant challenges. His freshman year was, as he describes it, a "mess." A car accident resulted in a leg injury, impacting his mobility and school attendance. Coupled with academic struggles, Keyshawn found himself navigating a difficult period, earning Cs and Ds. But the support and guidance he found at Shawnee led to what he and his friends call his “Academic Recovery Comeback.”
Finding Support and Inspiration
Keyshawn's sophomore year marked a turning point, fueled by a growing sense of belonging within the Shawnee community and the opportunities it offered. He began building relationships with teachers and other school staff, creating a vital support network that nurtured both his personal and academic growth. This connection to the school ignited his academic efforts, leading to a dramatic improvement in his grades. Exploring the diverse pathways available at Shawnee also allowed him to discover his passions and begin to excel in the classroom.
Beyond academics, Keyshawn found a home in the Shawnee sports community. He credits Coach Vernon Gibson and Coach Robert Fleming, who became vital mentors, for their guidance during this crucial time. "Coach Fleming became like a father to me," Keyshawn notes. This mentorship provided invaluable support, both on and off the field, as he navigated personal challenges and loss.
“My start was rocky. I barely came to school. But now I’ve made my academic recovery comeback.”
Discovering a Passion for Business
Exploring Shawnee's diverse pathways, Keyshawn discovered a passion for business, surpassing his initial interest in engineering. Dr. Reginald McDaniel played a pivotal role, providing not just academic support but also fostering Keyshawn's growth within the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). Recognizing Keyshawn's potential, Dr. McDaniel invited him to his classroom before school to work on FBLA projects. Arriving early, Keyshawn dedicated himself to FBLA, working alongside Dr. McDaniel. This dedication paid off handsomely during his junior year, when he placed first in regionals for name tag and also placed in presentations.
A Leader Emerges at Shawnee
Keyshawn seized the opportunities Shawnee offered, demonstrating a commitment to growth and community. He was nominated as an Academy Ambassador, valuing the chance to connect with students from other schools. "I love working with people," he explains. This passion for service led him to revive the Shawnee student council. His campaign slogan, "I'll make your year better. I'm here to help," resonated, leading to his election as Student Class President. He also embraced the challenge of building something new, helping start the wrestling team with Coach Ramsey and competing at the regional and JV state levels. These experiences, both inside and outside the classroom, reveal Keyshawn's drive to excel.
Triumph and Transformation: A Senior Leader
Now a senior, Keyshawn’s leadership shines. He’s the wrestling team captain, leading them to a winning record, and holds the top rank of Cadet Lieutenant Commander in JROTC. His academic transformation is complete; he's on the honor roll, a stark contrast to his freshman year. This turnaround is fueled by a newfound love of learning and his perseverance. Even when struggling with math, he mastered the subject.
Looking Towards the Future
Keyshawn's success is a product of his own determination, the support of his mentors, and the unwavering belief of his family, especially his mother, who works at UPS and holds a CPA license. "She is always here for me," he says. He has already received multiple scholarships to attend the University of Louisville, where he plans to study business administration. His aspirations include obtaining a real estate license and a doctorate in business administration. He's even considering staying involved with JROTC at UofL.
Keyshawn's impact on Shawnee is undeniable. He transformed his academic trajectory and contributed to the school community through leadership and service. "I'm happy to be at Shawnee," he concludes. "My start was rocky. I barely came to school." Now, he leaves a legacy of leadership, service, and academic excellence, ready to embrace the future.
