Echo Trail Students Explore High School Pathways on Charger Day

The Academies of Louisville and Explore share a common goal: to provide students with a seamless educational journey from middle school to high school and then to the real world. Charger Day, a collaborative event between Echo Trail Middle School and Jeffersontown High School, brought this vision to life, showcasing how the pathways in Consumer Science, Business and Communication, and Engineering and Design align to create a continuous learning experience. Held on March 18, 2025, this innovative initiative allowed 7th-grade students to experience firsthand the opportunities available in high school, fostering a deeper understanding of their potential future pathways.

A Day of Exploration and Connection

Charger Day was structured to provide a comprehensive experience for both Echo Trail and Jeffersontown students, featuring three key components: teaching and learning observations, Ambassador Lunch and Learn, and pathway hands-on experiences.

Teaching and Learning Observations

From 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Jeffersontown High School students in the Teaching and Learning pathway had a unique opportunity. These students followed customized schedules, observing classes and completing coursework related to their pathway. This hands-on experience allowed them to gain insights into the teaching profession while still in high school.

Ambassador Lunch and Learn

During the 7th-grade lunch period from 10:00 AM to 10:50 AM, Jeffersontown High School Ambassadors participated in the "Lunch & Learn" program. These ambassadors moved around the cafeteria, answering pathway-specific questions provided to the 7th-grade students. This casual interaction allowed middle schoolers to learn about high school life and various academic pathways in a relaxed setting. As one Jeffersontown student, La'Darion, humorously noted, he even "got asked for his number and his autograph," highlighting the positive connections made during this time.

Pathway Hands-on Experiences

The heart of Charger Day lay in the hands-on experiences offered to Echo Trail's 7th-grade students. Two rounds of students rotated through hour-long activities designed to showcase Jeffersontown's Academies and provide an interactive glimpse into potential high school pathways.

Allied Health (Consumer Science)
In the Multipurpose Room, students explored five engaging stations:

  • R.I.C.E. treatment

  • Sutures

  • Medical Jenga

  • Injections

  • PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

Jessica, a Jeffersontown health science student, shared her enthusiasm: "It was fun to explain the different utensils and how to use them. I was proud of how much I've learned at Jeffersontown, able to answer all of the middle schoolers' questions."

Business (Business & Communications)
In the Library, students tackled a creative challenge: designing a logo that integrated both Echo Trail and Jeffersontown High School's emblems. Xavier, a Jeffersontown student in the business pathway, explained, "The most creative design I saw used half the Jeffersontown logo with half of the Echo Trail logo." 

Build & Design (Engineering & Design)
The 8th Grade Den transformed into an engineering playground with stations such as:

  • Structure Challenge

  • Paper Airplane with Variables

  • Cable Car Challenge

  • Mario Kart Races (using tracks created and welded by Jeffersontown students)

Mr. Jason Stepp, Jeffersontown CAD teacher, enjoyed working on engineering projects with the students but joked, "They have too much energy for me," when asked about potentially teaching middle school.

These hands-on activities allowed Echo Trail students to engage directly with potential future pathways, making abstract concepts tangible and exciting while fostering curiosity about high school opportunities.

Bridging Pathways: Explore to Academies of Louisville

Charger Day exemplified the connection between the Explore middle school pathways and the Academies of Louisville high schools, offering key takeaways from this experience:

  1. Early Exposure: Charger Day provided 7th-grade students with early exposure to high school pathways, helping them make informed decisions about their future academic and career paths.

  2. Peer-to-Peer Learning: The involvement of high school students as mentors and presenters created a powerful learning dynamic. Lily, a Jeffersontown health science student, noted, "They were so energetic and wanted to talk," highlighting the positive and engaging nature of these interactions.

  3. Hands-On Experience: The event's focus on interactive, hands-on activities allowed middle school students to engage directly with potential future pathways, making abstract concepts tangible.

  4. Seamless Transition: By bringing high school experiences to the middle school setting, Charger Day helped demystify the transition to high school and showcased the continuity between Explore and Academies of Louisville programs.

  5. Community Building: The collaboration between Echo Trail and Jeffersontown High School fostered a sense of community and shared purpose, strengthening the educational ecosystem in Jefferson County.

As the day concluded, it was clear that Charger Day had continued the work of bridging middle and high school, inspiring students to "Expect Greatness" in their educational journey. The event not only showcased the pathways available but also demonstrated the power of collaboration in preparing students for success in high school and beyond.
