Cody's journey to success began during an eighth-grade walkthrough at Valley High School. "I wanted to do something hands-on," he recalls. The sight of HVAC and electrical classrooms at Valley inspired him to enroll in the Business and Industry Academy, where he pursued both HVAC and electrical pathways, laying a solid foundation for his future.

His experience in Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes proved transformative. The engaging, practical nature of these courses kept Cody motivated, even when other subjects felt less relevant. He not only learned the theory behind these trades but also gained valuable hands-on experience, becoming a skilled craftsman in the process. Cody's dedication extended beyond the classroom, as he spent additional time honing his skills in brazing copper, a crucial technique in HVAC work.

Influential Educators

Two instructors played pivotal roles in Cody's education: Mr. Greg Elsler, the HVAC instructor, and Mr. John Spiva, the Electrical instructor. Under their expert guidance, Cody completed NCCER training and earned his EPA certification, both essential credentials in the HVAC industry. During Cody's sophomore year, a class field trip to KCC exposed him to the manufacturing environment, allowing him to explore potential career paths and solidifying his interest in HVAC. As Cody approached his senior year, he sought a co-op opportunity to apply his skills while earning a paycheck. In February of this year, he secured a position at KCC Manufacturing. Balancing his studies with work, Cody dedicated four hours each day to his co-op, earning $15 per hour. This hands-on experience proved crucial, not only providing practical training but also motivating him academically. "I got my grades up for the co-op," Cody explains, highlighting the program's requirement to maintain a solid GPA for participation.

Cody's early exposure to the industry at KCC Manufacturing paved the way for a smooth transition into full-time employment upon graduation. As his high school career drew to a close, Cody approached Terra Beaver, Talent Specialist at KCC Manufacturing, about full-time opportunities. Fortunately, a position on the refrigeration line—the same role Cody had excelled in during his co-op—was available.

After receiving his diploma, Cody seamlessly stepped into his full-time role at KCC Manufacturing. This transition came with a well-deserved raise and a comprehensive benefits package, including the opportunity to receive company shares after six months of full-time employment. At just eighteen years old, Cody is already laying the foundation for a stable financial future, all without accruing any debt. Cody is hoping to buy his first car this year while getting to work by riding in a van with his co-workers in the meantime.

Terra Beaver emphasizes the significance of these educational partnerships for student success. "We provide opportunities that allow students to gain actual job experience on the floor," she explains. This real-world exposure proves invaluable for students like Cody, enabling them to directly apply their classroom knowledge in a professional setting.

KCC's dedication to fostering young talent is evident in their approach. "When we see that a co-op is the right fit, there's potential for it to evolve into a full-time position," Terra notes.
