Doss DECA Chapter Hosts Toy Drive for Saint Joseph Children's Home

The holiday season is a time to reflect on the importance of giving back to our community. This year, the DECA chapter at Doss High School is doing just that through a toy drive to support Saint Joseph Children's Home.

To encourage no-hassle donations, the club’s leaders have created an Amazon list that will deliver toys directly to the club’s leadership, where they will wrap and deliver the toys before the holidays.

DECA, the Distributive Education Clubs of America, is a student organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. The Doss DECA chapter, led by President Wendy Cano and Vice President of Marketing Allison Griggs, has decided to focus their community service efforts on providing toys for children in need this holiday season.

"I've received so much from different communities, and I think it's important to give back to communities that do the same thing that I received," said Allison. "It helped me so much and my family during the holidays. So I think it's really important to just give back what's given to you."

The DECA toy drive will benefit Saint Joseph Children's Home, an organization that provides a safe and nurturing environment for abused and neglected children. The toys collected will be distributed to children ranging from newborns to 16 years old who are currently residing at the home or have recently been adopted.

"We wanted to do a community service project, especially around the holidays," explained Wendy. "We're looking for mostly new toys so we can give them to the children at Saint Joseph for Christmas."

To make donating easy, the DECA chapter has set up an Amazon registry as well as collection boxes at several locations, including the school, a local Autozone, and the school's Class Act branch. The deadline for donations is Friday, December 20.

"Giving back has always been important to me and my family," said Wendy. "My mom usually sends a couple dollars back home to give to those kids who are in need, and I usually try to help in some way, or even volunteer somewhere that's helping and giving. It's just a part of who I am."

To donate, visit the Amazon registry or drop off new, unwrapped toys at one of the collection sites by December 20.
